1941 BMW R 12 Motorcycle--SOLD (New Jersey) - $0

Exceptionally rare survivor! The BMW Archives in Germany has records that document that this 1941 BMW R12 motorcycle was a very late model delivered on February 22, 1942 to the Heereszeugamt Munich--the Army Arsenal in Munich. The engine and frame VIN of this machine is 31764. Over the course of the seven year production run of the R 12 (1935-1941), there were 37,161 manufactured. Because of their wartime service only a small percentage of those machines continue to exist. BMW R12s had matching frame and chassis numbers and were built before the war as both single and twin carburetor versions. During the war most R12s supplied to the military were single carb only. It is thought that twin carburetor R12s were either prewar civilian machines pressed into military service or used as military courier machines. Fred Jacobs, head of the BMW Archives in Germany, and his colleague Andreas Harz wrote recently to say that the numbers on this bike were most likely restamped. They theorize that the engine casing is a spare part (which originally came without numbers, just as did spare frames) and it was restamped relatively early in the bike's career--most likely when the bike was used by the military. Although the R12 was eventually superseded by the heavy R75, the R12 was used throughout the war and was found on all was fronts in service with the German Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and Wehrmacht. This outstanding bike came to us from Barrington Motor Works, one of the world's finest vintage BMW motorcycle restoration specialists. Founders Christopher and Barbara Betjemann literally have written the books on vintage BMW motorcycle. Their “BMW /2 Motorcycle Restoration and Service Manual” and "BMW R50-69US Motorcycle Restoration and Service Manual" are the definitive resources for enthusiasts and restorers the world over. Additional similar manuals for other models of the vintage BMW motorcycle are currently under production. This rare bike can be displayed in a museum or private collection in its current unrestored state, or it can be refurbished for daily use and shows.
